It's Drains and Sewers Clogged

Manohar Khushalani

When residents cover or even fill up the storm water drains outside their houses to help park their cars or when the sarkari sweepers (employed by the municipality) also dump garbage into the open drains, it prevents rain water from reaching the nullahs and ultimately the river. Read More..

Creation Myths

The Infinity of Starting Points

Suryakanthi Tripathi

(Former Indian Ambassador to Spain)

What was there in the beginning and even before it? How did the beginning begin? And why? Each culture and age has asked these questions. The great mystery of it has been alive from the time the cavemen first gazed up at the stars and wondered. Dual Citizenship

Krishan Tyagi

(Former BBC Reporter)

Viswanathan Anand doesn’t feel humiliated when asked about his nationality, but all the Indians living abroad do.  The US, the UK, Spain, Germany, France, or any other civilised country would never ask their citizens living abroad such questions.  Indians living abroad, with selfless love for their motherland at their heart, do feel betrayed and insulted by India ’s attitude towards them.  The Human Resources Department (HRD) of the Indian government raising the question of Anand’s nationality, before conferring an honorary doctorate on him, reflects India ’s primitive thinking - that once you go abroad, you are no longer a real Indian. A strong attachment to the geography of India is a part of the Indian psyche, says Krishan Tyagi.  His article on the subject written in the wake of the Indian government providing the facility of Indian Overseas Citizenship is quite pertinent.  Read more…

Water Issues Between Riparian States

India and Pakistan

Manohar Khushalani

Water is a bone of contention between neighboring states competing for control of those resources. Since 1948, nearly 40 incidents of hostilities have taken place over water. Dwindling Resources

Using Sea Water

Manohar Khushalani

Fresh water is a dwindling resource. The only solution lies in having a holistic approach to the issue of water. This means that we have to look at other sources as well besides the traditional river source. If we can think out of the box we should be able to generate new ideas. This means that all techniques such as catchment area treatment & sediment control, reforestation, curbing pollution, preserving bio-diversity, salinity control, protection of water quality, combating global warming, greening of the Himalaya and reversing environmental degradation are many fields where concerted and coordinated action by all those sharing a river basin will be useful but ..
